StarMedia Network, Inc. And Bayside Motion Are Runners-Up
At Entrepreneurship Exhibition And Conference,

NEW YORK, NY, February 22, 1999 -- Harvard Business School Club of Greater New York (HBSC/NY) announced that David McCourt, Chairman/CEO of RCN Corporation (Nasdaq: RCNC), has been selected as the top entrepreneur in the club’s first annual awards exhibition and competition held at the Plaza Hotel. Through his strong leadership and entrepreneurial vision, McCourt has made RCN the nation's first and largest facilities-based provider of phone, cable and Internet service to the residential market, the Northeast's largest regional Internet Service Provider (ISP) and a major force shaping the deregulated communications landscape.

Fernando Espuelas, Chairman/CEO of StarMedia Network, Inc., the leading Internet portal site for Latin, Central and South America, and Howard Lind, Founder and Co-President of Bayside Motion Group, North America's leading manufacturer of precision gearheads and industrial motion control systems, were chosen as runners-up.

"With such a stellar group of ten finalists, the selection committee had a very difficult task in choosing a winner," said Ron Gerber, President of Gerber & Company, LLC and Chairperson of the event. "Under David McCourt's leadership, RCN has made significant progress in opening up the tri-state telecommunications marketplace against formidable competition"

The ten finalists in attendance were:
ASTRONET: Ms. Eugenie Diserio, Founder
BAYSIDE MOTION GROUP: Mr. Howard Lind, Co-founder
BIZTRAVEL.COM: Mr. John Williams, President
CD Radio, Inc.: Mr. David Margolese, Chairman and CEO
ITXC CORP: Ms. Mary Evslin, Co-founder
RCN CORPORATION: Mr. David McCourt, Chairman and CEO
STARMEDIA NETWORK: Mr. Fernando Espuelas, Chairman and CEO
THE STREET.COM: Mr. James Cramer, Co-founder
VANTAGE CUSTOM CLASSICS: Mr. Ira Neaman, President
WIT CAPITAL CORPORATION: Mr. Robert Lessin, Chairman and CEO

"I am both honored and thrilled to receive Harvard Business School’s inaugural award for top entrepreneur," McCourt said. "Although it was an honor to accept this award, it doesn’t belong only to me, it also belongs to RCN Corporation, which is a company of entrepreneurs who every day embody the sprit of entrepreneurship. It is this spirit at RCN that enables us to successfully compete with entrenched phone and cable monopolies."

Greg Maffei, CFO of Microsoft, delivered the keynote presentation at the event, attended by more than 300 club members, business leaders, representatives of the media and other guests. He described how Microsoft promotes entrepreneurship both internally and externally through its investing activities and close relationships with independent software developers. Professor Myra Hart, one of the original founders of Staples, spoke about HBS's entrepreneurial research and educational programs, which are now an important part of the curriculum.

The HBSC/NY also recognized five entrepreneurs as "Early Stage Honor Roll" recipients. By virtue of the age of the companies they are running, these entrepreneurs do not have the same breadth of accomplishment as the ten finalists, but nonetheless exhibit a strong sense of entrepreneurial spirit, vision and execution. The early stage honor roll entrepreneurs are:

COSMOCOM: Mr. Ari Sonesh, President and CEO
EZCD.COM: Mr. Jeremy Kagan, President and CEO
HEALTHQUEST I: Ms. Cynthia Ekberg Tsai, Chairman and CEO
SHOWNEWS: Ms. Dena Marei Trakes, President
TECHSPACE: Ms. Debra Larsen, Co-founder, CEO

Also providing their support and the attendance of their senior executives were the founding sponsors of the HBSC/NY entrepreneurs' conference and awards dinner:

Morgan Stanley Dean Witter
PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP
